Police warn of popular “Emergency Scam” making the rounds again

The OPP would like to warn the public that an old favourite scam is making the rounds again. The Emergency Scam involves someone posing as a family member in desperate need of immediate financial aid.  It’s also known as the Grandparent Scam because the caller preys on the elderly, getting them to hand over their money to someone they assume is their grandchild or young friend in trouble.

If you get a similar call, check the caller’s identity by asking them something only your family member would know. Do not give out any personal information, and report the call to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and the police.
