Parents told to plan ahead as CUPE strike looms

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) gave notice of a possible strike on Monday. CUPE represents school support staff, including educational assistants, early childhood educators, custodial/maintenance staff, clerical staff and library workers.

The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) says CUPE represents 1,600 employees within the board, or 40% of its staff. The board is encouraging parents and guardians to have childcare in place for Monday.

UCDSB Director Stephen Sliwa says the board is working through what actions need to be taken if there is a strike. He noted the board is uncertain at this time if a strike will transpire as the parties have said they are willing to continue negotiations.

The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) is currently developing a contingency plan in the event an agreement is not reached on Sunday.

CDSBEO Chair Todd Lalonde says the board continues to monitor the situation closely and appreciates the patience of the school community.
