OPP program beginning tomorrow for safeguarding properties

The OPP is looking to make sure properties are protected in the fall and winter seasons.

Grenville County OPP Constable Suzanne Runciman says lock your doors and windows and don’t leave a key outside.

Runciman says sometimes people with seasonal properties will leave their boats, motors or ATV’s outside. She says that’s fine as long as you have it secured, locked up and taking the keys with you.

There are also safety precautions for people that stay at their home all year round. Runciman says an alarm, a dog and locking your windows and doors are great ways to keep your property safe. She says trimming trees and shrubs so the house is somewhat visible for people are also good.

Runciman added get to know your neighbours as they are always the first people that see things happening.

“A nosy neighbour is not a bad thing when it comes to break-and-enters. If you’re one of those people that happens to see somebody that looks suspicious in your neighbourhood or a vehicle that’s driving around that you just feel odd about, don’t be afraid to contact the OPP.”

Runciman says starting tomorrow members of the OPP Auxiliary will be attending select area residences and businesses to increase public awareness on how property owners can discourage break-ins. She explains officers will be in areas where there have been break-and-enters and may knock on your door or leave a pamphlet with these tips in detail.

This “safeguard your home” program will run until October third.
