Local candidates respond to brownface, blackface images

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is under fire for donning racist makeup. Three instances of Trudeau in brownface/blackface surfaced in the national media this week.

The MyPrescottNow.com newsroom reached out to all five federal candidates for Leeds, Grenville, Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes to get statements on the matter.

Green Party candidate Lorraine Rekmans says she has no comment on this issue. Conservative incumbent Michael Barrett deferred to party leader Andrew Scheer’s statement. Scheer says Trudeau showed a lack of judgement and integrity.

NDP candidate Michelle Taylor says she certainly appreciates that many people would find the content of the images hurtful and she stands in solidarity with them.

People’s Party candidate Evan Hindle says he doesn’t think it holds any political relevance, especially when you consider that there are other things like the SNC-Lavalin scandal that people could criticize Trudeau for.

Liberal candidate Josh Bennett says he strongly condemns racism of all forms and there’s no place for it in the riding or anywhere in Canada. He noted that he first became aware of the incident when it was reported in the news and he was really disappointed.
