Walk for Freedom happening in Prescott this month

You can walk to help bring awareness to human trafficking this month.

The Walk for Freedom is back for its second year in Prescott. Organizer Denise March from Beacon Bags says human trafficking is an issue happening all over including in our area.

“I just want to bring awareness to people to help protect our young, vulnerable people that are out there that could possibly fall prey to that.”

The walk will be on September 21st beginning at 8:30 in the morning starting at 349 Churchill Road. It will be a five kilometer walk with all proceeds going to Victim Services of Leeds and Grenville.

March says last year they raised $1,000 and this year’s goal is to raise $2,000. She says there will also be LACE journals available for purchase at the event from 8:30 to 10:30. March says everyone dresses in black for the walk and puts a red x on the back of their hand that is used to symbolize putting a stop to trafficking. March says the black represents victims that feel invisible.

“Also, sometimes we will walk with our hand over our mouth because they feel like they’re silent and they’re not heard and so it’s just to represent victims and bring awareness to that.”

Anyone looking to sign up for the walk or make a donation can contact March at 613-213-2859 or emailing [email protected].
