Health unit discussing importance of quality child care

The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit are discussing the importance of quality child care in the area.

Registered Nurse Tanis Brown says there are two issues. One is child care spaces, where the child care can meet the needs of the different work schedules parents have, like early start times, later pickup and weekend workers. The other issue is actually having the child care providers.

“We need people who can provide child care to meet the needs of families who are working in other industries and positions.”

Brown says being able to access child care where people are living and working is convenient for things like drop-off and pickup.

Brown says quality child care is important for young children. Brown adds a number of things can contribute to creating a foundation for health and well-being that will continue into adult years.

“Age appropriate activities, a safe place for kids where they can be curious and move about in the environment so that they can learn all those physical and fine motor skills.”

Brown says the government is looking into the issues with child care and the health unit is waiting to hear the current information.
