STEO wants motorists to stop in the name of love as new school year approaches

Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario (STEO) is getting ready for the school year with a new campaign.

STEO is reminding motorists to ‘stop in the name of love’ when school is back in session. General Manager Janet Murray says one stop motorists may encounter is at school crossings.

“Anytime you see a school guard crossing with a red and white stop sign you need to stop before you reach the crossing and remain stopped until all people, including that crossing guard, have cleared the roadway and it’s safe to proceed.”

Murray says drivers need to stop for school buses whether you’re behind them or approaching them when the stop arm is extended and the red lights are flashing.

The third stop Murray says they’d like to remind motorists of is railway crossings. She says school buses are required by law to stop at railway crossings.

“They need to stop and actually open their doors to listen for an approaching train before they can proceed. So, if you’re coming up behind a school bus at a railway crossing just make sure you leave a little extra time to allow that bus to stop, listen and proceed along safely.”

As of today, people can find their bus stop information for this year at STEO’s website here.
