Habitat builds now happening in Prescott, Cardinal

There’s been a change of plans for this year’s Habitat for Humanity Thousand Islands build. The organization originally announced two semi-detached homes in Prescott, on Boundary Street.

Vice Chair Martin Van Andel says due to unforeseen circumstances, plans had to be altered. Town services bypass the lot owned by Habitat, which would’ve cost between $180,000 to $200,000 to resolve, according to Van Andel.

Habitat has since purchased two new lots, one in Prescott at the corner of Dibble and Sophia, and the other on Dundas Street in Cardinal.

Van Andel says the organization was committed to build because the family selection process had already started. He noted Habitat received a number of applications from the Cardinal area, so it worked out well.

The board is currently reviewing applications and the goal is to get shovels in the ground sometime in September. Volunteers will be needed starting in October, once the foundations are laid.

Van Andel says Habitat will also be looking for donations of building materials. He noted the organization tries to get the best deals possible, but still has to bring in electricians, plumbers and other professionals.
