Leeds & Grenville Interval House (LGIH) is extending thanks to the community for supporting its Walk A Mile In Her Shoes event. Men donned red high heels to take a stand against violence towards women. The event was held in Brockville on May 25. Over $10,000 was raised in support of LGIH programming.
Executive Director Charlene Catchpole says violence against young women is on the rise in Leeds and Grenville. She noted the 10-bed shelter is currently serving 16 women and children. Catchpole says the shelter has been over capacity, averaging between 130 and 140%, for well over two years.
The marks the second Walk A Mile In Her Shoes event in Brockville. Catchpole says it’s a fun way for men to engage in the issue.
She noted border services, firefighters and police officers – all in full uniform – participated this year. Catchpole says it’s a powerful image for women who are survivors of violence to see people in their community take that on.
