The Ottawa Humane Society is looking to help cats not suited for traditional home environments find alternative locations.
The society created a program called the Working Whiskers Cat Program. The program aims to find environments like a barn, stable, auto repair shop, wood working shop, winey, brewery, greenhouse garden centre, storage facilities or warehouse for certain cats.
Manger of Communications Lesley Foster says as an open shelter they regularly take in cats that aren’t able to adapt to a regular home.
“These cats are independent and usually self-sufficient but not what you’d call cuddlers. Some people might call them mousers or rodent managers because they typically prefer to live outside, in a barn or shed.”
Foster says these alternative environments have to be heated and the cats must be taken care of with food and water. Foster says each cat will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and healthy when they are placed out. Foster says they are looking for places within approximately two hour radius from the centre.
There is no adoption fee according to Foster. Someone looking to adopt won’t actually choose which cat they receive because the cat is going to be chosen for them based on the facility that person has.
