UPDATED: missing campers found safe

UPDATE: The two girls missing in Algonquin Park have been found. confirmed with the OPP moments ago that the pair of 16-year-olds from Kitchener was found safe and sound by the OPP K-9 Unit.  The girls are still in the Park but the OPP is working on a plan to get them out and back home to their families.

The search continues as police haven’t found the two teenage girls missing in Algonquin Park.

The OPP issued an updated release Monday morning regarding search efforts. It said a helicopter and floatplane are searching by air and officers are being assisted by K9 units, park wardens members of the Ontario Search and Rescue Organization on foot.

Mirota is described as about 5′ tall, thin with long auburn

hair. Malek is around 6′ tall, average build, shoulder-length, dirty blonde hair and wears glasses. Both girls are from Kitchener, Ontario.

The girls were last seen Thursday on the Western Uplands Trail, between Rainbow Lake and Susan Lake. The release said they had a tent, other camping equipment and limited supplies.

Police also ask any campers in the area or passing through to be on the lookout for them. The OPP is asking people to not come and assist, though they appreciate those willing to volunteer in the search. “All of our searchers are specially trained and all are GPS tracked,” police said in the release. “Having additional people could hinder potential tracking efforts by the dogs and increase the possibility of someone else getting lost.”

Officers continue to follow-up on public tips regarding potential sightings. Anyone who thinks they may have seen the girls, or have any information, are asked to call 1-888-310-1122 immediately.
