100th anniversary of Grenville County Plowing Match

The Grenville County Plowmen’s Association will mark a major milestone this year. The 100th anniversary of the Plowing Match is set for September 27 and 28. The event is being held on the Kemptville College grounds, where the first match took place a century ago.

The junior match is set for Friday followed by the county match on Saturday, in the fields surrounding the Barr Arena. Competitors will be using horses, antique tractors and modern tractors. The public is welcome to attend. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

Director Allison Dangerfield says the competitors are judged on open split, crown, finish and overall lands. She noted there’s quite a technique to plowing.

The Plowing Match runs from 9:00am to 3:00pm on Friday and 8:00am to 4:00pm on Saturday.

Dangerfield says there were 400 spectators at the inaugural Plowing Match. She says the goal is to do that again this year, in honour of the 100th anniversary.
