Alcohol and teeth don’t mix: ODA

The Ontario Dental Association (ODA) is asking people to mind their oral health while enjoying the summer. Too much alcohol can damage your teeth, according to the association.

The ODA says champagne and wine contain lots of sugar and acid, which can erode enamel. The carbonation and sugar in beer and ciders can cause tooth decay and liquor can dry out the mouth, leading to cavities and bad breath. The ODA says pop and juices can also do damage.

President Dr. Kim Hansen says water is your best friend. He noted water hydrates you, lowers the acidity content in your mouth and helps to wash out some of that sugar.

Hansen says brushing your teeth three times daily is optimal, but when drinking alcohol, the tooth structure can soften up. He explained people should wait 30 minutes after drinking before brushing.
