Local story sharing campaign enters third year

The St. Lawrence-Rideau Immigration Partnership is looking for local people to share their stories.

The partnership is going into its third year of the “We Are Neighbours” initiative. Program Manager Melissa Francis says it’s essentially a story sharing campaign where they go to people throughout Leeds and Grenville for about six months of the year to learn why they call the area home.

Francis says it is to help create welcoming communities for immigrants in Leeds and Grenville and also recognizes and celebrates diversity here.

Francis says the theme this year is food so they are looking for people that have recipes as well. Francis says they do about 25 to 30 stories between now and Christmas.

“So we’ve got a few recipes already that people have contributed. Mostly stuff from their home country, things that their grandmother maybe made when they were younger or something that was a part of special celebrations each year.”

Past stories have come from international students from all over the world talking about why they chose Leeds and Grenville to study in. There have also been maple syrup farmers, goat farmers and donkey farmers talking about why they love living in Leeds and Grenville. Francis adds the stories are posted to a website dedicated to the stories and also on Facebook.

People who have a story they would like to share can call 613-498-2111 and ask for the immigration partnership staff or email [email protected].
