Applications open for Habitat build in Prescott

Habitat for Humanity Thousand Islands is looking for prospective homeowners. Applications are open for the two semi-detached homes being built in Prescott, on Boundary Street. The groundbreaking is slated for this summer.

Chair of Family Selection Angela Smith says people have a misconception that it’s a lottery. She says successful applicants buy the home from Habitat at fair market value. Smith says organization wants to make sure people can afford the mortgage, which is generally less than rent.

She explained the program provides people with an opportunity to own a home by giving them a hand-up, not a hand-out.

Smith says Habitat holds the mortgage, so the criteria is a little bit looser than banks. She noted the organization provides 100 per cent of the financing, so people don’t have to come up with a down payment.

Families selected put in sweat equity by helping with the build and volunteering at the ReStore. Applications will be accepted until the end of June.
