Scammers using emails from ‘friends’ to swindle people out of money: OPP

Grenville County OPP is putting out a warning to the public after a ‘friends’ email scam popped up last week. Police say the resident recognized it as a scam and reported it, without any financial loss.

The OPP says people will get an email stating ‘urgent request from a friend.’ The message will come from a real email address from a real friend of yours, according to police.

In this instance, the scammer asked the resident to buy Amazon gift cards and then send photos of the scratched off bar code on the back.

The OPP says one clue to look for is poorly written English. Another red flag is the request for money via gift card codes.

If you are a victim or fraud, or unsure if something is a scam, contact Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477.
