Flag raising marks 50th anniversary of Special Olympics

Special Olympics is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Grenville County OPP held a flag raising ceremony this morning to mark the milestone. It took place at St. Michael Catholic High School in Kemptville. Local Special Olympians joined in the celebration.

Detective Staff Sgt. Chad Culbert says the OPP is proud to support the Special Olympics. He says it’s important to help local athletes.

The first Invitational Youth Games is being held in Toronto this May. The event will bring together over 2,000 athletes, between the ages of 13 and 21, from around the world. Donations to cover costs for athletes to compete are being accepted. For more information, click here.

Culbert says he’s seen the impact Special Olympics has firsthand. His daughter Kaci Mia Culbert will be representing North Grenville at the games. He says it’s an opportunity for athletes to excel and meet new friends. Culbert says the sportsmanship displayed at the Special Olympics is indescribable.
