At-risk youth being sponsored by community members

Connect Youth has partnered with St. James Anglican Church in Maitland to sponsor at-risk youth. Members of the church heard about a similar program in Ottawa and reached out to the organization with the idea. Sponsors provide $100 per month to local students with limited financial means.

Program Manager Victoria Robertson says Connect Youth was able to choose three students who are working hard in school, but are dealing with challenges.

The sponsorship started this month and will run until the end of the school year. The goal is to run the program again, starting in September. Anyone in the community can sponsor a youth and charitable receipts are available.

Robertson says it helps local youth do things they wouldn’t otherwise be able to, like get their licence or go to a school dance.

She says there are dozens of youth that could benefit from the sponsorship program.
