St. Mary collects over 12,000 items for local food banks

Food banks in Prescott and Brockville got a boost from students and staff at St. Mary Catholic High School. A canned food drive, organized by the school’s Justice League, kicked off in November. It wrapped up before Christmas, with a final tally of 12,487 items.

The food drive has been a school tradition for 19 years. During a presentation to the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario, Chaplaincy Lead Cathy Cavanagh and student Alisha Bhatt noted that 40 per cent of food bank users are children.

Student Trustee Michael Fenn says the food drive opened his eyes to the impact students can have on the community.
