Cold weather causing ice jams: RVCA

The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) is warning the public about localized ice jams and flooding. The recent very cold temperatures and significant snowfall are causing the issue, according to the RVCA.

Ice jams have been reported on the Tay River in Port Elmsley, causing flooding of some properties.

The RVCA says ice jams can form anywhere on open water and its difficult to predict when or where they will happen. People are being asked to keep an eye out for ice jams and notify the RVCA if observed.

Warmer weather, starting tomorrow, is expected to break up the ice jams. The RVCA says its important for people to stay away from all rivers where there is an ice jam and explain the dangers to their children.
