OPP officers hit trails for Snowmobile Safety Week

OPP officers will be out this week making sure trail riders are following the rules. Snowmobile Safety Week kicked off Saturday and runs until Sunday.

The OPP says breaking the rules comes with penalties, including fines, loss of licence, criminal charges and imprisonment. Officers will be looking for people who are speeding, fail to stop at crossings and with blood alcohol levels above the legal limit.

Leeds Detachment Commander Acting Inspector Nancy Graves says a rider impaired by drugs or alcohol can be issued the same penalties as a driver on the road.

The OPP says people need to have a valid driver’s licence (if under the age of 16, a Snow Vehicle Operator’s Licence), proof of ownership, sled registration, proof of insurance, approved snowmobile helmet and a valid trail permit.
