TISS team wins first overall at math tournament

Students at Thousand Islands Secondary School (TISS) are celebrating a mathematical win. The team won first overall at the Eastern Ontario Math League tournament. The competition was held Friday at St. Michael Catholic High School in Kemptville.

Joel Bartlett, Troy Gonidis, Edwin Mooney and Lucas Vicente beat 31 other teams from Catholic and public schools across Eastern Ontario. Gonidis also won the individual competition.

Co-Coach Kevin Gray says the school is known in the community for its athletic program, but the win shows TISS is academically strong too.

The competition is run by the Kingston Math League. It is designed to help students discover the joys of math. Students compete in individual rounds and team rounds. Top competitors participate in the Jeopardy-style round.

Smiths Falls and District Collegiate Institute placed second and Brockville Collegiate Institute claimed third.
