Provincial committee looks into protecting barns from fire

In light of the recent barn fires that occurred in Ontario over the past few weeks, The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs wants to help prevent such losses by promoting fire safety on farms and agricultural properties in our community. A technical advisory committee on farm fires has created a document informing farmers how to avoid the tragedy of a barn fire.

The committee found the most common causes of barn fires to be chemical reactions, faulty wiring, misuse of heating equipment, and open flame. Recommendations include taking steps to protect equipment from corrosion in a humid barn, and housing equipment in a fire-proof room to minimize the opportunity for fire to spread.
