Conservative candidate Michael Barrett wins MP seat

The people have voted. Unofficial results for the federal by-election in Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes are in.

Conservative candidate Michael Barrett has claimed the MP seat.

The polls closed at 8:30pm tonight. Results began rolling in around 9:00pm. Barrett took an early lead, maintaining about 60 per cent of the vote. Liberal candidate Mary Jean McFall trailed at about 30 per cent.

Barrett says he is looking forward to getting started and working with caucus. He says he has been hearing from residents and business owners about what the federal government can do to make life easier for them.

Voter turnout was low, with just over 32 per cent of eligible voters casting ballots. The general federal election is set for next year.

Barrett says not everyone cast a ballot in support of him, but he is going to support them. He says his door is always open.

The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville was Conservative from 1979 to 1988. The Liberal Party took over and held the seat until 2004, when the late Gord Brown was first elected MP.

The riding changed to Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes in 2015. Brown held the seat until his death in May.
