OPP warns of grandparent scam

The Grenville County OPP is putting out a warning to the public. The OPP says the grandparent scam has surfaced in the area again.

The scam involves a frantic phone call or emergency email to the victim from someone claiming to be a grandchild, friend or loved one. The scammer will say they are in legal trouble, have been injured or need help getting home from a foreign country. The caller asks the victim to send money right away.

The scammer tries to create a sense of urgency, which may cause the victim to not verify the story. The caller often insists the victim not tell anyone about what’s going on and to send the money through a money transfer company. Sometimes the scammer will ask for banking and personal information.

If a scammer calls your or you have been the victim of fraud, contact the OPP by calling 613-925-4221 and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
