Local Community Hub Raising Awareness of Canada Learning Bond

It is Education Savings Week and a community hub is encouraging families to save early.

The theme this year is “Start Good Habits Early” and the Bartholomew Street Community Hub is raising awareness of the Canada Learning Bond. Beth Steel is the Coordinator at the hub and says they want people to think early about heading to school.

“What we find is that when kids and parents have an aspiration for school, then it becomes an action.”

With this bond, the government initially gives $500 per child, then $100 each year until the age of 15 to a maximum of $2,000. The money helps cover apprenticeship programs, trade schools, colleges and universities after high school.

Steel says this is one of the few government programs that she’s aware of where there really isn’t a catch. She also says there are many families in Leeds and Grenville that have not applied and are eligible. More details about the Canada Learning Bond can be found at smartsaver.org or by calling Bartholomew Hub at 613-704-2383.
