OPP offers up tips for winter driving

The OPP wants people to stay safe behind the wheel this winter. The OPP says it’s important to stay alert, slow down and stay in control.

The OPP says to drive according to current road and weather conditions. People are reminded to reduce their speed when bad weather rolls in.

Constable Suzanne Runciman says people are often in a hurry to get where they need to be, but if you get into a collision or wind up in the ditch, you’re not getting there quickly.

Keeping a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you is key.

Runciman says if roads are icy or snow covered, drivers are more likely to slide into the vehicle in front of them because it takes more time to stop.

The OPP says cleaning off your vehicle before driving allows you to see and be seen. Winter tires and good wiper blades also make a difference.

The OPP recommends people carry a charged cell phone, ice scraper, snow brush, small shovel, sand, flashlight, first aid kit, booster cables and a tow rope in their vehicles.

To check on road conditions before heading out, you can call 5-1-1. The Ministry of Transportation’s Traveller Information Services provides road information for provincial highways in Ontario. You can also check conditions online by clicking here.
