Local Brewery Owner Says Suppliers Don’t Anticipate Barley Shortage

The Owner of Windmill Brewery says suppliers don’t foresee a malted barley shortage.

Owner Sean Lucey says based on the grain suppliers for the brewery they don’t expect a price increase on craft beer specifically due to grain. This follows news that snow and rain damaged some malting barley crops in Canada.

Lucey says most of the malted barley they use is from Alberta and his suppliers say they will just spread out their load over more farms. He explains a barley shortage could happen if the suppliers have an abnormally wet or dry season.

“What happens is the crop starts to germinate in the field, in the case of Alberta, and it’s no longer good for malting.”

Lucey says they will go through a couple tens-of-thousands of pounds of malted barley per year at the brewery.
