Health unit sends out tips to avoid getting sick

The Leeds Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit wants you to take care of yourself to avoid getting sick.

Doctor Paula Stewart says the flu season generally starts late November/early December and peaks over Christmas time. She says last year it lasted until April. The best ways to avoid sick is to wash hands regularly, use hand sanitizer and cough into your sleeve. In the bathroom, keep the services well disinfected because it’s when you’re touching things, after coughing, that you can spread the virus.

Stewart adds the most basic thing to do is get immunized. The flu vaccine is out in primary care provider offices and pharmacies now. She explains children under six, pregnant woman, people over 65 and anyone with a health condition like COPD, diabetes or heart disease is most vulnerable to the flu.

Stewart says if you are sick, stay home so the virus can’t be spread to others.
