Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario (STEO) is promoting the importance of school bus safety this week.
October 22nd to the 26th is School Bus Safety Week. Janet Murray is General Manager and CAO for STEO and says now that students have been in school for about a month and a half, they don’t want anybody to become complacent with the buses on the road.
“Really it’s a nice reminder to people in the community just to make sure that they drive with extra caution around school buses. Make sure that they stop when the stop arm is extended. Just make sure that they’re sharing the road with their student travelers who are on their journey to school.”
Murray says they are really focused on distracted driving. She explains they want to remind motorists to leave lots of time in the morning and afternoon for their commute, so they don’t feel rushed.
“One of our biggest tips is just to leave the phone alone when you’re behind the wheel and really concentrate on the drive.”
Murray adds they have reached out to local police about bus safety. She says they are always diligent but they are particularly diligent this week to make sure drivers are aware of what their obligations are.
Tomorrow is School Bus Driver Appreciation Day and Murray says it is a good day to reach out to bus drivers and show appreciation.
