Kingston teen in custody after stealing van and running from police

A 17-year-old male from Kingston is facing a string of charges after one wild ride. Just after 4:00pm on Monday, OPP officers from Leeds County received several reports of a white cargo van driving dangerously on the 401. Police caught up with the vehicle around 4:30 just west of Brockville, but officers couldn’t get the driver to stop. As the young driver continued to escape the police attempts to stop him, he crashed the van at Blue Church Road.

The driver jumped out of the van, crossed the median and ran into live lanes of traffic. He tried to get into a stopped vehicle and a police cruiser. Both attempts were unsuccessful, and he was taken into custody. Investigation showed the van had been stolen from a business in Kingston earlier that afternoon. No one was hurt in the chase.

The teenager is charged with dangerous driving, failing to remain at a collision, flight from police, motor vehicle theft and resisting arrest. He appeared in court for a bail hearing yesterday. The investigation continues.
