OPP reminds people to wear seat belts after 34 deaths so far this year

The OPP is gearing up for its Fall Seat Belt Campaign. Officers investigated 34 road fatalities so far this year in which the victims were reportedly not wearing seat belts.

The OPP is reminding drivers and passengers that air bags do not replace seat belts. When a head-on collision launches people in a vehicle forwards – even at low speeds – the outcome can be deadly without a seat belt.

Grenville County OPP confirmed that 5 seat belt tickets were issued during a single shift yesterday.

OPP Deputy Commissioner Brad Blair says a seat belt remains your first line of defence and your best chance of surviving a collision. He says while air bags are a second line of defence, they will not restrain you.

“Only your seat belt can hold you in place. Whether you are a driver or passenger, don’t let anyone in a vehicle be without their seat belt properly fastened,” says Blair.

The statistics are stark: 93 per cent of Canadians wear seat belts and the 7 per cent who don’t make up almost 40 per cent of deaths in vehicle collisions, according to Transport Canada.

During the Fall Seat Belt Campaign, the OPP will be visible throughout the province as they conduct education and enforcement initiatives aimed at getting people to buckle up.
