MPP Steve Clark says the deficit found in the Independent Financial Commission of Inquiry is a shocking revelation.
The Ontario Government released the 2017/2018 Public Accounts and Findings of the Inquiry. It found that the previous government left the province with a $15 billion deficit. Clark says people need to know that Ontarians were lied to.
“The previous Liberal government used accounting tricks and really ignored established public accounting standards to put themselves in the black.”
He says by releasing the report today, they’re taking the first step of many on the path to restore accountability and trust in government. Clark continues by saying the deficit really crowds out the opportunity to spend money on programs that Ontarians want.
“I think our government for the people has to now look at what the Independent Commission of Financial Inquiry’s reports have said. There are going to be some tough decisions that the government has to make to get our fiscal house back in order.”
Clark thanks the Finance Minister, Vic Fedeli, and the President of the Treasury Board, Peter Bethlenfalvy, for the work that they’ve done and finishes by saying it’s a really sad indictment by the previous government.
