Taxi Company May Be Allowed To Have Another License

A taxi company in Prescott may be able to have more than 50-percent of the taxi licenses in town.

The Town of Prescott currently allocates eight licenses for taxicabs with only 50-percent of them allowed to go to one company. Matthew Armstrong is the CAO and Treasurer for Prescott. At the Committee of the Whole meeting on Monday night, he said a company currently has four licenses right now. The committee voted to recommend that council change the by-law to allow one taxicab company to have 75-percent of taxicab licenses in Prescott.

Armstrong noted, this request is coming for people who are travelling out of town to work.

The changes to the by-law would include that the Taxicab Stand Owner would have the extra license but they could be taken away once another Taxicab Stand Owner requests one to be at the 50-percent mark for licenses.

Mayor Brett Todd questioned how legally they would be able to enforce taking back a license. He said he supports the plan but it would it could put someone in a tough position if they had to take back a license from the business with 75-percent of the licenses. Armstrong said they did run it past legal and it would be one of the conditions of the license.

The next council meeting is scheduled for this Monday.
