Local Online Fundraiser Surpasses Organizer’s Expectations

A local fundraiser has almost reached its goal of $20,000.

A gofundme page was set up after Damian Sobieraj’s body was found in the St. Lawrence River last Friday in Brockville. Sally Mellon Bell is the Organizer of the page and says the money will be going to Sobieraj’s mother, Iwona. On the page it says Iwona pulls unwanted animals from high kill shelters, takes in animals from owners that are no longer able or willing to care for them and gives them a second chance at a better life. Bell says it was an easy and quick decision to help out.

“When I learned of her son Damian’s death and the horrific circumstances surrounding it, I knew she would need help. I initially offered to help with the animals in the care, but knew that financial support would be far more useful to her.”

After four days, the campaign has raised over $16,000. Bell adds the money will go to Damian’s aftercare expenses and she hopes there is some left to help Iwona pay outstanding bills.

“She has given so much to help others and animals in our community and beyond, it was only fitting for us to give back.”

Bell says already raising more than half the goal in funds has surpassed her expectations for sure but also doesn’t surprise her because Iwona has touched many people’s lives and made a difference to animals in need. A link to the fundraising campaign can be found here.

Anyone with information about Damian’s death are asked to contact Brockville Police at 613-342-0127.
