OPP Warn About Computer Hacking

The OPP wants the public to be aware of hacks or viruses on computer systems.

The OPP says there have been several ransomware attacks on businesses and municipal government offices in Ontario. Police say a ransomware attack is when a cyber-criminal hacks or puts a virus on a computer system. The computer system would then be unusable without a decryption key. The cyber-criminal then demands ransom in exchange for the key. Police note the ransom they ask for is usually Bitcoin. Police add there are many ways ransomware can be distributed including a phishing email or by directly hacking a vulnerable computer system.

Constable Suzanne Runciman from the Prescott OPP Detachment, says she has not been advised of any attacks in the Leeds and Grenville area.

Police say the information that should be given to the police if a ransomware attack happens includes: A screenshot or photograph of the ransomware demand, a screenshot or photograph of the encrypted files including full file name and extension, any contact email address provided by the attackers and any bitcoin wallet addresses provided by the attackers.

The OPP says to prevent a ransomware attack IT technicians should constantly assess and invest in security of their computer systems.
