Girls aged nine to 13 can join a free peer to peer mentoring program during the school year.
The Girl Talk Event is run at Seaway Christian Pentecostal Church on 349 Churchill Road East in Prescott. Registration is Wednesday, September 12th. Sign up is at the Church from 6:30 to 7:30 that evening.
Tammy Hache is an Advisor in the program and says the typical meeting lasts about an hour and a strong point of the program is to volunteer in the community.
“(The event) starts off with a snack and socialize. And then they have a little break the ice, a way to get them involved in the topic that we’re going to be talking about. And then we have a leader, and she goes experience of what she’s gone through. Then we solve the problem and we talk about it.”
Hache says there are different topics covered including: being nice, diversity and “you can do it.”
“It’s very eye opening for the girls, like every topic that we do, they learn from it. I think the biggest thing that we really get from it is that they’re learning it from a high school girl that has experienced it.”
The program also has planned outings the girls can enjoy. Hache says they would like to go to a movie in Brockville, walk the railway tunnel in Brockville and go on picnics.
Hache notes they are always looking for new leaders. Anyone looking to be a leader can contact Hache at 613-925-2333.
This program runs every Wednesday night from September 19th to June at 6:30 in the evening.
