Local Cyclists Raising Money For Sight

Kylie Malanka and her 12 year-old son, Austin, will be riding their bicycles 50 kilometers this Sunday in Carp.

The ride is part of the Cycle for Sight event that supports the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Their team name is Eye Cycle 2 and they have pledged to raise $500 for the event. They’re currently about $200 away from their goal. To help raise money they are collecting empties in a bottle drive.

The team will be collecting empties through Thursday this week at the Prescott Optometric Centre (Dr. Holmes office) on 270 Edward Street South in Prescott. Malanka adds the money they’ve been able to raise so far has come from all around the area.

Malanka is an Optician at Dr. Holmes office and says working there and having macular degeneration run in their family makes it hit home harder. She has cycled in this event before and adds she’s honoured to have Austin ride with her this year.

This will be Austin’s first time participating in this event.

Malanka thanks everyone for helping out and says this will not be their last ride noting her 10 year-old daughter, Jillian, is already getting antsy to ride with them.

Cash donations can be made online here or by dropping it off at Dr. Holmes’ office. Any donation over $20 will receive a tax receipt.
