170 Cyclists Will Be Riding Through Prescott

The Waterfront Regeneration Trust’s 11th annual Great Waterfront Trail Adventure will have 170 cyclists riding through Prescott tomorrow.

The riders are going from Ajax to Quebec through the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail. They will be starting their ride in Brockville tomorrow morning around 7:30.

Marlaine Koehler is the Executive Director of the Waterfront Regeneration Trust and says the ride is usually between 80 and 100 kilometres per day, on occasion they have one shorter day travelling 40 kilometres. They are planning to cycle into Cornwall tomorrow, going the maximum distance 110 kilometres.

Prescott will be the first rest stop tomorrow and station for the shuttle. Koehler points out Katie Allard has done a great job organizing the rest stop by Water Street.

The event was started back in 2008 with multiple waterfront communities. Koehler says they work with 140 communities and they wanted people to understand how fantastic the trail is with gorgeous sites to see and businesses along the way.

Koehler says this year’s tour was one of the fastest to sell out. The youngest rider this year is 13 years old and the oldest is in his 80’s. Koehler notes a lot of the riders are 40 or older.

Koehler says the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail is a wonderful initiative by all the community groups to protect, connect and celebrate Canada’s Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River.
