Jail guard strike called off as deal is struck with province

The crisis has been averted, for now. On Saturday morning, OPSEU representatives announced they had reached a deal with the government on behalf of Ontario corrections officers. After going without a contract for over a year, jail guards across the province – including those at the Brockville Jail – were set to go on strike Saturday at midnight.

They were asking for an immediate ten percent raise to bring them up to what they consider fair compensation in relation to similar positions. They also asked for a collective agreement that would be specific to corrections only, along with binding arbitration. The details of the new deal will be outlined following a ratification vote.

OPSEU continues to push for a solution to under-staffing, which they say has led to the current #crisisincorrections
