Checking Your Well Water with the Health Unit

World Water Day is March 22nd and the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit is suggesting residents on wells use it as a chance to check their source.

According to the Health Unit there are checks and balances in place to ensure drinking water is safe and protected but the same can’t be said about all wells. They say it is the responsibility of those living on well water to ensure it is drinkable.

The Health Unit suggests testing your drinking water at least three times a year. The test is free and water sample bottles are available at both health unit offices and municipal offices. They also have many suggests for protecting your water source including; maintaining your well by ensuring the surface water is flowing away from the casing and fixing a proper lid to keep out vermin, maintaining your septic system so as not to accidentally contaminate the groundwater and keeping chemicals away from your well or flood prone areas.
