March is Nutrition Month

Unlocking your food’s potential is this month’s focus at the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit.

March is Nutrition Month and the goal is encouraging children to eat well & help set them up for a lifetime of healthy eating. We are united in so many ways by food, whether it’s at the dinner table or through the many traditions we have around cooking and preparing.

The Health Unit’s list of benefits includes things like prevention of illness and chronic diseases but also takes in to account snacking, shopping and spending more time with your family.

1) Fuel our bodies every day with meals and snacks that keep us energized and feeling healthy.

2) Bring us together. We might enjoy a meal with others, share cultural traditions and foods, or include others in meal planning, grocery shopping, cooking and even gardening.

3) Prevent illness and chronic diseases by enjoying a variety of “everyday” foods like vegetables and fruit, whole grains, lean meats and alternatives and lower fat milk and fortified alternatives.

4) Allow us to discover new experiences. Visit a local farmer’s market or community garden and try something new. To find a market or garden in your neighbourhood, click here.
