CDSBEO receives update on Indigenous Education

The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario’s Board of Trustees was presented with an update on Indigenous Education at its latest meeting.

It took place Tuesday. Indigenous Education Lead Marian Lawson MacDonald gave the trustees a look at the recent developments and initiatives in the Indigenous Education Program.

Lawson MacDonald says they’ve been called to action through recommendations set out by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Lawson MacDonald says her role is to look at the recommendations and also take into account goals established through the Ministry of Education through an Indigenous lens.

Lawson MacDonald continued, saying that the CDSBEO is very proactive and has an involved committee that advises and guides decision making. She says the Indigenous Education Advisory Team works in partnership with the Special Education team, and other leads using the collection of data that helps with the planning needs of students.

Lawson MacDonald noted that report card data comparing average marks of CDSBEO self-identified students versus non-identified students tells them that there’s a minimal gap between the two groups. She stated that the provincial gap is much larger which means the CDSBEO is on the right track.

The board has also established the FNMI Student Support Initiative which provides tutors and targeted supports for Indigenous students based on individual needs.

The board says it has implemented many initiatives to further support Indigenous students and cultural learning for non-Indigenous students and staff since the 2015-2016 school year.

Lawson MacDonald says providing authentic information through community partners is paramount to ensuring the next generation of youth respect, appreciate and understand First Nation, Métis and Inuit culture, history and perspective.
