Coroner’s inquest into 2008 death of Jamie Hawley continues

A jury is wrapping up week one of a coroner’s inquest into the 2008 death of Prescott’s Jamie Hawley. Jamie died of starvation, pneumonia and infection while in the care of his brother Jerry, who is currently serving twenty years for the crime.

Social workers said they found it difficult to arrange access to the Hawley home for their safety checks. So far the jury has decided that service providers need better-defined mandates and more thorough follow-up procedures. They also recommended that police record-keeping be improved.

The recommendations are being made so that similar deaths do not occur in the future. The inquest is expected to last ten days.
