Prescott’s Matthew Markell is a winner.

The skater earned gold in the Junior Men’s category at the National Skating Championships in Vancouver. Markell skated to fourth place in his short program on Monday and followed it up with a 1st place finish in his long. His combined scores placed him at the top of the standings.

Alaine Chartrand will begin her road to make it to the Olympics tomorrow.

Chartrand is competing in the Seniors Women’s category. The competition will decide which three women will compete in South Korea at the Winter Games.

Chartrand performs her short program tomorrow with the free skate going Saturday.
