Cure for Kaiden

A local family is raising money to help fund lifesaving research.

Kaiden Sturgeon-Harper is a two year-old boy suffering from Sandhoff Disease, a rare genetic condition that is usually fatal before the age of four. There is no cure for the disease but family friend Danielle Illingworth says they haven’t given up hope.

According to Illingworth they’re trying to raise a million dollars to help fund research being done by a Kingston lab. She says fundraising has been going on for over two years but after seeing that Kaiden’s mother needed support she stepped in to lend a hand.

Dr. Jagdeep Walia, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Queen’s University, has been working on a cure and trying to raise funds to move on to clinical trials. If human trials are approved the injection will still be costly, so for now Kaiden’s family is raising money and petitioning the federal government to approve the trials.
