Children will no longer be able to skate immediately after school in Morrisburg.
The Municipality of South Dundas has announced they will no longer be holding their After School Skates. Ben Macpherson, Director of Recreation and Facility with the municipality, says they made the decision after talking with arena staff. Under the Occupiers Liability Act arena staff can become the legal guardian of a child when they arrive at the rink, and remain that way until the child gets home. Macpherson says there have been instances in other areas where children were injured after leaving a recreation complex and town staff were charged.
Due to the number of children who attended the After School Skates without a parent or guardian the municipality thought it was unfair to put that level of responsibility on their staff. Macpherson says he has answered a number of calls from parents asking why the change and, after explaining the situation, they have been very understanding.
The arena will still be holding their other skating sessions as scheduled.
